Workshop

Mapping Resistances: Dialogues on Online Gender-Based Violence and Activisms from the Global South

Taynãh Andrade (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco)

March 7, 2025, 11h00 (GMT)

Online event

This workshop aims to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue on the movement of cyberfeminist collectives in Latin America and the forms of resistance they have developed, considering the specificities of the Global South and the challenges posed by online gender-based violence. It also explores how digital dynamics reinforce structural inequalities of gender, race, and class, profoundly affecting women.

The presentation of an initial cartography of Latin American cyberfeminist collectives is designed to understand how these groups organise themselves, how they act in defence of women's rights, what practises they combat and what forms of resistance they adopt. From this mapping, it will be possible to discuss the strategies used by these collectives to combat online gender-based violence, offering an overview of the actions developed in the Latin American context.

Through this workshop, we will encourage reflections on digital activism and epistemologies of the Global South, highlighting the importance of post-colonial and decolonial thinking in Feminist Theory. In addition, a discussion on the research methodologies adopted to map the collectives will detail the methods used and the limitations encountered in collecting this data, with special attention to the ethical aspects related to research in digital contexts. The event is thus configured as a collaborative space for mutual learning, presenting tools for expanding networks of resistance and building alternatives to the oppressive dynamics of contemporary technologies.
