The book Poder - Análise crítica de um conceito [Power - Critical Analysis of a Concept], by Augusto Santos Silva, is a conceptual essay on the most normal thing in the world. However, it is saturated with meanings, motivating words loaded with value. Is power always domination? Does it contradict freedom?

This book seeks to clarify the constellation of notions that revolve around power. When should we talk about influence and coercion? What is the difference between leadership and command, authority and arbitrariness? What are the main sources of power? What is hegemony? What about charisma?

The concept of power is central to understanding the political system and international relations. But it is no less true that it also sheds light on our understanding of relations between genders, groups and classes, or the structure of organisations. That's why it's so important to know what we're talking about when we talk about power, which will only happen if the various social sciences are mobilised for this purpose, also drawing on law, philosophy and literature where necessary.
