February 26, 2026, 16h00-18h00
Room 1, CES | Alta
Álvaro de Barros Geraldo, a Portuguese photographer who lived in Guinea-Bissau from the mid-1950s, closely documented the tensions and profound social and political transformations that marked the period of colonial war and the wars of liberation in that country.
Based on his unpublished estate, which is held at the Overseas Historical Archive, the exhibition Imaginaries of Guinea-Bissau. The estate of Álvaro de Barros Geraldo (1955-1975) was held at the National Museum of Natural History and Science from 9 May to 7 September. The exhibition was curated by researchers Inês Vieira Gomes and Catarina Laranjeiro. The book, like the exhibition, contributes to the critical examination of the legacies of Portuguese colonialism. Through photography and historical research, it proposes to revisit the memory of the colonial past and reflect on the forging of national identities, as well as the post-revolutionary context in Portugal.
In this roundtable, the exhibition book will be discussed and commented on by doctoral students from the University of Coimbra. The event will be attended by the authors.
