Land grabbing in Eastern Europe has increasingly been recognised as a pressing environmental and human rights concern. The post-socialist transition to market economies has reshaped rural life in ways that have gradually undermined the capacity for social reproduction in many rural communities. Against this backdrop of economic restructuring and social fragmentation, unequal, often insidious power dynamics among peasants, local officials, investors, and economic elites have intensified. Small-scale land disputes and everyday forms of extractive violence are frequently normalised or rendered invisible, creating the conditions that enable large-scale land grabbing. By bringing these "hidden in plain sight" dynamics to the forefront, the lecture highlights the structural complexity of land grabbing and underscores the need to approach the phenomenon through an environmental justice lens.


Bio note

Hestia-Ioana Delibas is PhD Candidate in the program "Democracy in the Twenty-First Century" linked to the Centre for Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra. Her research interests revolve around the topic of social and environmental justice, emancipatory rural politics and decolonialism with a focus on post-socialist spaces. She completed her master's degree in Advanced Sociological Research and her Bachelor's degree in Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, from Babes-Bolyai University. In 2021, she was a PhD fellow i in the project JustFood: From Alternative Food Networks to Environmental Justice, funded by Foundation for Science and Technology. She received a research scholarship awarded by FCT for her doctoral research. She is also a member of ECOSOC at CES..
