Jonas Van Vossole

Biography

Jonas Van Vossole is an FCT-CEEC Individual Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), University of Coimbra, and Assistant Professor of Political Theory at the Instituto Superior de Estudos Interculturais e Transdisciplinares (ISEIT), Viseu. He is co-coordinator of the Ecology and Society (ECOSOC) research laboratory at CES. He is the author of Capitalism, Crisis and Democracy (Brill, 2026), which examines the relationship between democratic legitimacy, capitalist crisis, and political transformation from the perspective of critical political theory. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Coimbra and master's degrees in Political Science and Complementary Economics from Ghent University. His research lies at the intersection of political theory, political economy, and political ecology, with particular interests in democracy, labour, capitalism, social movements, ecological transition, and Eco-Marxism. His doctoral research analysed the impact of the euro crisis on democratic legitimacy in Southern Europe, while his postdoctoral research focused on the relationship between labour, ecology, and political economy. His work has been published in journals including Review (Fernand Braudel Center), Capitalism Nature Socialism, Journal of World-Systems Research, Patterns of Prejudice, Critique, and Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais. He is currently undertaking the FCT-funded research project Nature and Labour, which investigates how trade union democracy can contribute to addressing the intertwined democratic and ecological crises of contemporary capitalism. Drawing on critical political economy, Eco-Marxism, and the political thought of Rosa Luxemburg, the project explores the relationship between labour struggles, ecological transition, and prefigurative politics through empirical research on industrial conflicts, trade unions, and environmental movements. He is also a member of the coordinating team of the FCT project EJMapping and has collaborated with the Horizon 2020 project Just2CE. Alongside his research, Jonas teaches undergraduate and doctoral courses in political theory, political economy, democracy, and ecology, supervises doctoral students, and regularly presents his work at international conferences across Europe and the Americas.
