Jessemusse Cacinda


Biography

He is a PhD candidate in Post-Colonialisms and Global Citizenship (Sociology) at CES/FEUC - University of Coimbra, with an approved thesis project titled: "The New Man and the Post-Socialist Transition in Africa: The Case of Mozambican Students in Cuba." In 2019, he obtained a Master's degree in Sociology from Eduardo Mondlane University, defending the dissertation "The Voices that Build a City: Interactivity Between Citizens and Public Servants in the Municipality of Quelimane (2014-2018)." He is the Co-Founder of Ethale Publishing, one of the most influential publishing houses in the African literary scene, where he served as its first Director from 2016 to 2022. He was a journalist at Rádio Moçambique, where he won the "Quality Award" in the categories of "Best Chronicle" (2012) and "Best Thematic Report" (2013). He also worked as a researcher at SEKELEKANI, a leading investigative journalism organization in Mozambique, signing numerous reports covering protests by communities affected by the extractive industry in Tete and Cabo Delgado, as well as the first published report on the situation of internally displaced persons due to terrorism in northern Mozambique. Between 2021 and 2024, he was a University Assistant (Lecturer) at Joaquim Chissano University in Maputo, and in 2024, while in Portugal, he collaborated as a junior researcher on the "Revolutionary Pedagogies" project at the Center for Social Studies. As a writer, he is the author of the novel Kwashala Blues, which explores existential issues through the story of a typist who receives the news of his father's death. He also coordinated three anthologies featuring young Mozambican writers who use literary art to discuss the country's social issues. Additionally, he has written chapters in academic books and co-edited Mozambique: Emergency, Reconstruction, and Resilience with Adelino Assane, Fidel Terrenciano, and Adriano Félix. His research spans documentary journalism, philosophical essays, and sociological investigation.
