This PhD programme is biennial and offered jointly by the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL), the Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra (FEUC) and the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão da Universidade de Lisboa (ISEG-UL).

The 2023/24 edition is due to open in ISEG-UL.

Who can apply?

1- Applicants for admission to the Doctoral Programme must be:
- Holders of any master degree in Social Sciences and Humanities.
- In addition, the program’s coordinators may consider applicants with other second cycle level backgrounds thought as adequate for prosecution of this program of studies, taking into consideration the candidates’ CV.
2 - The recognition referred to in subparagraphs b) and c) of paragraph 1 only allows access to the cycle of studies leading to a PhD Degree and does not grant its holder the recognition or equivalence to a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.

NOTE: Students are required to complete the academic part of the PhD in the first two years of enrolment. Otherwise, they will have to make a new application in the next edition of the programme with the corresponding coordinating institution.

Required documentation

- Certificate of Bachelor's degree with final course classification (diploma). If the certificate does not indicate the average of completion, a certificate proving approval in the curricular units carried out must be included, with respective classifications (school transcript) (MANDATORY, except if the primary course is a course taught at the University of Coimbra)
- Certificate of Master's degree with final classification (diploma). If the certificate does not indicate the average of completion, a certificate proving approval in the curricular units carried out must be included, with respective classifications (school transcript) (MANDATORY, except if the primary course is a course taught at the University of Coimbra)
- Curriculum Vitae (MANDATORY)
- Diploma proving the command of the English language (if any)
- Identity Document (MANDATORY only for foreign applicants)
- Motivation Letter (MANDATORY)
- Official declaration of course outlines and hourly course loads with classification of each course unit of courses previously taken (transcript), in case of equivalence credits request (MANDATORY, except in degrees awarded by the University of Coimbra under the Bologna Process – after 2007/2008)

NOTE: If the documents mentioned above are written in a foreign language other than Spanish, French, and English, it is mandatory to present a translation to Portuguese undertaken by a translator recognised by the Portuguese diplomatic representation. The submission of the authenticated original documents is mandatory to the applicants admitted who enrol and register and must be done until the 31st of December of the year of entry in order to complete their personal file. Further information here.

Evaluation Criteria

Assessment without interview

Applicants’ merit will be assessed based on the following items (100%):
1. Academic CV (70%)
The academic curriculum will be weighted, on a scale of 0 to 20, according to the following criteria:
1.1. Final classification of the bachelor’s degree, on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.25.
1.2. Final classification of other academic studies, in particular, master's degree, on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.15.
1.3 Evaluation of scientific CV, in a total of 20 points, multiplied by 0.2, according to the following criteria:
a) Participation in research projects carried out in R&D institutions;
b) Scientific publications.
1.4. English proficiency, rated on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.1.
2. Professional CV (15%)
The professional curriculum will be weighted, on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.15.
3. Motivation (15%)
The applicant’s profile will be evaluated, in a total of 20 points, multiplied by 0.15, considering the applicant’s motivation letter, which must specify, among other things, the topics or areas of scientific interest in which the applicant would like to develop the research project.

Assessment with interview

Applicants’ merit will be assessed taking into account the following items (70%):
1. Academic CV (50%)
The academic curriculum will be weighted, on a scale of 0 to 20, according to the following criteria:
1.1. Final classification of the bachelor’s degree, on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.25.
1.2. Final classification of other academic studies, in particular, master's degree, on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.1.
1.3 Evaluation of the scientific curriculum, in a total of 20 values, multiplied by 0.2, according to the following criteria:
a) Participation in research projects carried out in R&D institutions;
b) Scientific publications.
1.4. English proficiency, classified on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.1.
2. Professional CV (10%)
The professional curriculum will be weighted, on a scale of 0 to 20, multiplied by 0.15.
3. Motivation (10%)
The applicant’s profile will be evaluated, in a total of 20 points, multiplied by 0.15, considering the applicant’s motivation letter, which must specify, among other things, the topics or areas of scientific interest in which the applicant would like to develop the research project.
Individual interview (30%).

NOTE: Assessed applications that have a grade lower than 9.5 in one of the evaluation criteria will automatically become non-approved.

Informations for candidates

- Application is subject to the payment of a 50EUR fee, which is non-refundable, even in case of invalidation of application and of non-placement.
- Applications are submitted online
- Applicants who do not have the documents attesting the required qualifications or other documents until the end of the deadline for applications may apply conditionally. If they do not submit the required documents until the new deadline provided, they can move their application into the following call without any additional charges. If they choose not to move their application within the mentioned deadline, their application will become “Not Admitted” in the final ranking list.
- In applications definitively considered valid, and after the evaluation period has started, it is not possible to add or replace the documents presented. To add new documentation, a new application must be submitted in the next phase, if any.
- After the last phase of applications, and if there are still places available, applicants may submit their application by means of a request, beyond the deadline, which will be duly appraised by the coordination of the Course /Organisational Unit.
