Since 2005 CES has organised an Annual Series of Lectures to get to know, reflect on and discuss research work produced inside and outside Portugal by young social scientists. At the origin of this series was the desire to promote interdisciplinary dialogue based on work produced in other institutions. To this end, we have been able to count on the contribution of some of the most promising young social scientists, who have been joined by actors with different backgrounds. Thus, meetings have been held with people from various areas and academic institutions and from different civil society organisations.

The XVII Edition of this event focuses on narratives and research paths in the Social Sciences, articulating some of the current concerns regarding scientific research, involving the selection of themes and methodological approaches, the difficulties associated with the research process, the writing of a dissertation, the publication of results, and the post-doctoral experience. While the previous issue reflected around the different thematic lines recently implemented at the Centre for Social Studies, the present issue aims at promoting a discussion around central issues for those who are starting - or are already involved in - a PhD programme.

In order to foster dialogue and the sharing of experiences, we have invited three researchers who, in a first phase, will explore how they "navigated" doctoral - and post-doctoral - difficulties in the context of different institutions, disciplines and themes, later integrating a roundtable that aims to include the CES Community - particularly the doctoral students - in the debate on these issues.
