Background

The workshop “Introduction to Cartography: from the fundamentals to the application of geotechnologies in Social Cartography” aims to provide introductory training in the principles of Cartography, combining theoretical foundations, geospatial technologies and participatory approaches focused on Social Cartography. The programme integrates classic cartographic content with contemporary digital tools, fostering a critical understanding of map production and interpretation.

The overall objective is to enable participants to understand, interpret and produce cartographic representations, using theoretical foundations and geotechnology tools, with an emphasis on Social Cartography practices. The specific objectives include:
* Understanding the basic concepts of cartography and its forms of representation;

* Identifying different types of cartographic projections and their applications;

* Understanding reference systems, coordinates and geographical positioning;

* Introducing concepts of remote sensing and geoprocessing;

* Using geospatial tools such as OpenStreetMap, Google Earth and QGIS;

* Developing an understanding of participatory mapping and Social Cartography;

* Critically analysing maps and their social and political dimensions.
