Jorge Figueira
Biography
Jorge Figueira graduated in Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto in 1992. He got is PhD Degree at the University of Coimbra, 2009, in the field of History and Theory. He is Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology University of Coimbra, and was its director between 2010 and 2017. Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies, and he was vice-president of the Scientific Board between 2019 and 2022. He is invited Professor at the Phd Programme in the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, Visiting Researcher at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (2018) and Visiting Professor of the Escola da Cidade, São Paulo (2020, 2018, 2016, 2012). He is Principal Investigator of the research project (EU)ROPA - Rise of Portuguese Architecture, financed through COMPETE 2020 and the Foundation for Science and Technology. He is author of several books on contemporary architecture including Arquitectanic. Os dias da troika, Note (2016), A Periferia Perfeita. Pós- modernidade na arquitectura portuguesa. Anos 1960-1980, Caleidoscópio (2014), Reescrever o Pós-Moderno, Dafne (2011), Macau 2011, Circo de Ideias, O Arquitecto Azul, Coimbra University Press, (2010), A noite em arquitectura, Relógio d'Água (2007). He was the editor of Álvaro Siza. Modern Redux, Hatje Cantz (2008, Berlin). He was the curator of several exhibitions including "Physics of Portuguese Heritage. Architecture and Memory", Museu de Arte Popular, Lisboa (2018/2019), "Oscillations. Eduardo Souto de Moura", Camões-Centro Cultural Português, Maputo and Beira, Moçambique (2016); "Álvaro Siza. Modern Redux", Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2008. Co-curator of the Portuguese representation at the Bienal de S. Paulo, Brasil, em 2007. He has presented his research in several universities and institutions including the Society of Architectural Historians Annual International Conference (Pasadena, 2016; Glasgow 2017); and the European Architectural History Network Meeting. Dublin (2016). He was the local director of the Biennial Conference of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments, IASTE, "The Politics of Tradition" (Coimbra, 2018). He has lectured at, amongst others instituitions, Escola da Cidade, São Paulo, (Brasil), Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Sul, Porto Alegre (Brasil), UNICAMP, Campinas (Brasil), Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Universidade de Brasília (Brasil), FADU-UNL, Santa Fé (Argentina), Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá (Colombia), Architects Association of Macau (China), School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens (Greece), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), Escola Técnica Superior de Coruña, (Spain), Università IUAV di Venezia (Italy), National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, in Oslo (Norway), Faculdade de Engenharia, Departamento de Arquitectura, Universidade Agostinho Neto, Luanda (Angola), Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt (Germany). He has published papers and reviews in several specialized publications and international journals including Journal of Architecture, Architectural Histories, Architecture Beyond Europe Journal, AV Monografias, Arqtexto, aU, Arquitectura Viva, Casabella, A+U , SAJ Serbian Architectural Journal, Docomomo Journal. He is a member of the executive board of Red PHI Património histórico+cultural Iberoamericano and an expert for the "European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award". He collaborates as an architectural critic with Público newspaper, since 2003. He recently contributed with the essay "Eduardo Souto de Moura: Chapels (Architettura per i musei)" to the book Souto de Moura - Memory, Projects, Works, published by Yale University Press (2019).
