Mara Pieri, CES researcher, was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2nd edition of the Virgínia Quaresma International Prize in Cultural Studies, with the thesis Chroniqueers: time, care and visibility in narratives from queer people with a chronic illness, defended in 2021, at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), in the scope of the Doctoral Programme Human Rights in Contemporary Societies, under the supervision of Bruno Sena Martins and Elia Arfini.

The thesis sought to analyse narratives of LGBTQ+ young adults with chronic illness, with the research drawing on 24 narrative interviews conducted in Portugal and Italy between 2016 and 2019.

Promoted by the University of Aveiro (UA), this International Prize is supported by the International Network in Cultural Studies (RIEC) and the National Network in Cultural Studies (RNEC) and is sponsored by the Centro Region Directorate of Culture.

In 2022, the prize received 39 applications, 12 more than the previous edition. In total, theses from 20 institutions were submitted, eight of them national and 12 international, from the USA, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil.
